House of Assembly Turmoil: Two Members Instate New Speaker Amid Rivers Crisis

Lawmakers aligned with Governor Siminalayi Fubara orchestrated the election of Hon. Victor Oko Jumbo as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly on Wednesday.

This move transpired shortly after Governor Fubara dismissed the 27 legislators who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as inconsequential.

Within the same timeframe, the APC, now the majority, instructed its members in the state parliament to pursue the governor’s impeachment.

In light of these developments, a group of lawmakers reportedly convened and selected Jumbo, a seasoned representative of Bonny Constituency, as the new Speaker.

Oko assumes the Speaker role, succeeding Edison Ehie and Martin Amaewhule in this administration.

The proceedings on Wednesday also saw Hon. Sokari Goodboy appointed as the Majority Leader of the Assembly.

Following the oath-taking ceremony, the newly elected Speaker addressed the press, affirming a commitment to transparency and public engagement. He directed the clerk to inform the Governor of the Assembly’s new leadership and expressed readiness to serve the people of Rivers State diligently.
