Police Inspector Arrested for Assaulting and Extorting Young Lady in Ogun State
A police inspector in Ogun State has been arrested and detained for assaulting and extorting a young lady at a checkpoint near Tai Solarin University of Education in Ijebu Ode Local Government Area.
The incident, which was captured on a viral video, sparked public outrage and prompted the police authorities to launch an investigation.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the arrest and detention of the inspector in an official statement released on Tuesday. She said the inspector, who is facing trial, was found guilty of misconduct after a thorough investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department.
Odutola revealed that the investigation traced the account number where the extorted money was deposited and recovered the money as exhibits. She also said the inspector was issued an official query and detained for orderly room trial, under the supervision of the Provost department.
The police spokesperson assured the public that the State Police Command is committed to its zero-tolerance policy against any form of misconduct by police personnel. She also said the Commissioner of Police, Alamutu Abiodun Mustapha, has been in touch with the family of the complainant and has vowed to hold the officers accountable for their actions.
She further stated that the Commissioner of Police has been educating the officers and personnel of the Command on the importance of respecting the fundamental human rights of the citizens and warned that any officer who violates the rights of the public will face sanctions.
