FCTA Shuts Down Illegal Orphanage, Rescues 23 Trafficked Children

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) on Monday closed the Priesthood Orphanage in Karon Majigi village, Abuja, after rescuing about 23 children aged between one and 14 from the facility.

According to DAILY POST, the children were reportedly trafficked from Plateau State.

The Mandate Secretary of the Women Affairs Secretariat, FCTA, Mrs Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, disclosed this while handing over the children to the Plateau State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs Caroline Dafur, in Abuja.

Benjamins-Laniyi said that the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, had given the secretariat the mandate to profile and recertify all the orphanages operating in the territory.

“As a result of this, one of the first things I have done is to get approval for the recertification of all orphanage homes in Abuja.

“The Minister has approved that we should conduct a comprehensive reprofiling and recertification of all the orphanages in Abuja,” she said.

The mandate secretary said that the secretariat was working closely with Dafur to reunite the children with their families.
She added that some of the children had been living in the unregistered orphanage since 2019.
